If your family seeks action and thrills along with fun on a beach, you’ll love this adventurous journey through Costa Rica. Discover stunning wildlife, lush lowland rainforests and pristine beaches while canoeing, zip-lining, hiking and rafting.
Day 1 San Jose
Welcome to Costa Rica! You’ve landed in its largest city, the capital located in the plain of the Central Valley. As you exit customs, look for our representative holding the Thomson Family Adventures sign. You’ll be transferred to your hotel, about a 30-minute drive. Your adventure begins!
Day 2 Tortuguero
Today, you'll head to Tortuguero National Park, a region of primary rainforest rich with wildlife and flora and a birder’s paradise. You'll depart early for the 3-hour drive to Caño Blano, with a stop for breakfast en route. Then, board a jungle boat for an exciting 90-minute ride through the canal, the. only 'road' into the park. The wildlife viewing on the way is amazing, and it's just the beginning of what awaits. Arrive at the hotel dock and check in. Then, hop into canoes for a guided paddle through narrower canals; watch for the monkeys, the peering eyes of crocs and caiman, slithery river otters, tall herons, and bright egrets, parrots and toucans. It’s an amazing symphony of nature! Continue by canoe to Casa Cecropia to learn about chocolate and maybe even get a (temporary) tattoo with a vegetable ink.
Day 3 Tortuguero
This morning, embark on a jungle boat cruise with your naturalist guide in search of wildlife along the banks of the canals. Then, head by boat to tiny Tortuguero town and its school for our Friends Across Borders meet-up. It may seem hard to make friends if you don’t share a language - but everyone speaks ‘fun and games!’ Add ice cream, and you’ll be friends in no time. This afternoon, enjoy the walking trails at the lodge and have a dip in the pool.
During nesting season (July through September) there is an option for a night walk in search of the green sea turtles who lumber to shore to bury their eggs in the sand.
Day 4 Puerto Viejo De Sarapiqui
Today, say goodbye to the howler monkeys and remote jungle as you head back through the canals and to your van. It's about a 2-hour drive to the Sarapiquí region, passing plantations of banana, coffee and cacao; there will be a stop for lunch along the way. Enjoy the trails, tropical gardens and pool at your lodge this afternoon.
Day 5 Puerto Viejo De Sarapiqui
Today you'll discover why Sarapiquí is an adventure lover's paradise! Start with the fun and thrill of a Class II/III whitewater rafting experience on the Rio Sarapiquí where quiet crystalline pools follow each run of rapids. The endangered great green macaw is sometimes spotted in this rainforest as well as other exotic birds, like the keel billed toucan. Then, head to the treetops for an exhilarating zip-line journey with 14 runs crossing lush rainforest and the river you rafted just below.
Note, the minimum age for rafting is 6 years old.
Day 6 Puntarenas
Prepare for a drive to the Pacific Coast. You'll visit Corso Lecheria, a working dairy farm, on the way. Enjoy the beautiful rolling hills and a unique view of the Poás Volcano. Learn to milk the cows and see and taste the diary products that milk becomes, from delicious cheese to luscious ice cream. Try the juicy strawberries cultivated here and play with the bunnies and chickens in the mini-farm. You'll have time to explore the resort or relax by the pool when you arrive at your hotel this afternoon.
Day 7 Puntarenas
Today, head into the ocean with your choice of Outrigger canoe, stand up paddleboard, or ocean kayak. Enjoy a guided excursion along the coast passing high cliffs, home to pelicans, frigate birds and serene beaches. Take a stroll in town along Paseo de los Tourists and don't miss the chance to try a Churchill, the official treat of Puntarenas and a Tico favorite. The afternoon is yours to enjoy the resort activities and spa. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner with your guide and new friends.
Day 8 Saying Good Bye
A private transfer to San Jose airport is included; please book your return flight for noon or later to provide time for the 90-minute drive and pre-flight check-in time. Hasta la vista Costa Rica!
